Working “Outside of Time” on Jagera and Turrbal country, Amber Simpson creates rich, tactile marquetry and oil paintings that transform timber into a painterly language. Balancing material tradition with contemporary expression, her practice explores introspection, material memory and our relationship with the world we inhabit.

Evocative of the silent and the unseen, her interior landscapes serve as meditations on stillness - places where thought lingers and meaning is not declared, but discovered. Through her work, Amber cultivates a space where the visible world and the felt experience coexist - carefully composed, quietly unsettled, and deeply human.

Born to a woodworker in the Southern Highlands of NSW, the maker in her was awakened early. The home she grew up in was bordered by bushland, and it was this early immersion that instilled a deep reverence and connection to the natural world. Reminiscent of her father’s workshop, the scent of timber transcends time - mixing with linseed oil and varnish within her own studio.

Graduating from the North Adelaide School of Art in 2001, she had a successful career as an interior stylist. Through this work she came to understand and express people’s emotional connection to the interiors they dwell in and to help them shape their personal, creative and safe spaces. In time, she came to see the spaces people inhabit as being inseparable from the interior life of the self.

Amber is a dedicated traveller whose collected adventures and conversations from around the world bring meaning to her life and art. She is represented by Revival Art & Design Gallery in Brisbane and her work can be found in private collections throughout Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Singapore.
